Electric vehicles are the epitome of clean technology, but they rarely rank very high when it comes to power. Electricity lacks the necessary push to give drivers the what they are looking for in a vehicle. Having said that, there are some brands that people did not expect to try to go electric.

The ERAD Technology
The manufacturer developed the Integrated Electric Rear Axle Drive (ERAD) technology. The e-terrain system allows the vehicle to move off without the driver needing to start the engine, along with supplying extra power to go over tough terrain. The ERAD is not an independent electrical system, and still relies on the Diesel Engine. But, it is a piece of technology that provides new dimensions to a system that suffers from a reputation of being limited.
The ERAD system is the product of a multi-million dollar Energy Savings Trust from the UK government, and is part of a broader program called e Terrain Technologies. The first vehicles with the ERAD system are a pair of Freelander 2 prototypes at the 2008 London Motor Show.
The goal of the design is to keep in touch with the all-terrain spirit of the brand’s line of vehicles. The brand’s engineers are turning the ERAD system into a scalable and modular system that is applicable to across a variety of models and powertrains.
The All-Terrain Electric Defender was unveiled early last year, and the brand stated that the vehicle produced zero emissions. The vehicle can reach eighty kilometres per hour or drive in low speed off terrain situations for eight hours.
